SCRANTON SCHOOL BACK-TO-SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

August 2023

Where has the summer gone? I hope you are having a great summer vacation and are preparing for another great school year. I have a few important reminders for you.  The 2023-2024 school year will officially begin on August 22. The school day will once again run from 8:25 AM until 3:15 PM. If your children ride a bus route, your route driver will contact you with the time of pickup in the morning.

We are excited to have most of our staff returning, but we have one new face as Mr. Ryan Stuhaug will be our new 7-12 Social Studies teacher. We are also working on adding a paraprofessional for the upcoming school year and should have that position filled by day one. We are excited to have Mr. Stuhaug join our team!

Student meal tickets are $3.50 per meal for yearly tickets and $3.55 for daily individual tickets. The yearly price for a meal ticket is $612.50 per student. Student meal tickets must be purchased prior to the student eating in the program or arrangements must be made ahead of time. If a balance exists on a previous year's account, please develop a plan to work towards getting this balance paid off. I would like to encourage everyone to fill out a free and reduced priced meal form in the event you qualify to receive benefits. The North Dakota State Legislature passed a bill this past spring making qualifications much wider in scope. This application is short, and the information remains confidential. Many of the federal programs we receive funds through use the percentage of free and reduced priced meals to determine our funding. Our lunch program is also better subsidized for these meals. A family's income can be quite high and still qualify for reduced priced meals. The form is included in this newsletter, and we have other forms available in the office ready to be picked up upon request. Please take the time to fill out this form and turn it into the school office.

Parents also enjoy rights under the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA). This law affords parents certain rights regarding our conduction of surveys, collection and use of information for marketing purposes, and certain physical exams. More details about PPRA are in this newsletter.

Once again Scranton Public School will be in excellent condition when the students return. Our staff has worked hard to make Scranton School a top-notch facility. We have made updates to our elementary classrooms, replaced the crash mats in the gymnasium, and made several other improvements. If you run into our custodial staff, give them a shout out for keeping our building in tip top shape.

Another great announcement is that we will once again host a football game in Scranton this year. The Beach Buccaneers will make the trip to Scranton to take on the Night Hawks on September 15, with kickoff scheduled at 6:00 PM.  This will be the first game held in Scranton in four years, so let us make it a memorable one for our athletes.

2023-2024 can be our best year yet at Scranton Public School. We will continue to provide a great education for our students. We cannot wait to get our students and staff back into the classroom. Go Night Hawks!

Sincerely,

Kelly Pierce

Superintendent
